To drive Pikes Peak is a wonderful and MUST SEE attraction for anyone visiting Colorado Springs or Colorado in general. Loved by locals and visitors, the drive offers spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains that you won’t get anywhere else. With the summit being more than 2 miles above sea level, you and everyone else will have their breath taken as you wind through the narrow cliff-side road. Upon ascension and descension, do yourself a favor and make some stops to explore (and let the driver take a rest and enjoy the view too). This will also be a perfect opportunity to take some RAD selfies and get some Instagram & Snapchat love.
At the top, you will be treated to a stunning view and a lodging area to take a break, grab some coffee/water, and maybe a super-duper-cheesy souvenir. On a good day, you will find a relatively large crowd but there will be plenty of room to explore the peak and take photos. Remember, this is only the halfway point! On the way back, keep the car in either 1st or second gear to avoid going to fast on upcoming-hidden bends. Going slower will also increase your chance of seeing Bigfoot, FYI.
WARNING!!! To drive Pikes Peak is not for the faint of heart. Being so high (no pun intended) can cause shortness of breath and sleepiness. Also, even though it’ll be tempting, DO NOT allow the driver to consume any cannabis/THC. Sorry, but you’ll thank me later. To drive Pikes Peak requires full attention by the driver as you will be feet from the edge of the cliff with minimal guardrails. The drive could be prone to a little ice or snow (Park rangers will close it if it is too dangerous). You will be met with a handful of 180 degree turns with other drivers making the same turn in the opposite direction. Don’t forget to make sure that your brakes are in good condition. Bottom line…take your time and enjoy the drive. Don’t rush this beautiful excursion.
