All the Ways to Reach Pikes Peak

With the epic pinnacle of Pikes Peak reaching 14,115 feet into the sky, everyone that visits the Colorado Springs region wants to reach the top. So, whether you are a hiker, a day-tripper, or a thrill-seeker, these are all the ways to visit this infamous peak.

RAD Hostel - Pikes Peak Highway
Pikes Peak Highway

The most classic way to reach the top of Pikes Peak is to drive the 19 miles of beautiful scenic roads that provide scenic views from every vantage point as you make your way higher and higher into the sky to the best overlook of all.

RAD Hostel - Barr Trail
Barr Trail

For the hiker’s in the bunch, this is a 13 mile, one-way hike. It’s recommended to leave early in the morning so you reach the peak before the mid-day storms. With forestry, rock formations, and unbeatable views from the summit, this option is for the true nature lover.

RAD Hostel - Barr Camp
Barr Camp

A beautiful overlook on your way up and down the mountain. When the railroad re-opens, request Mountain View stop. From there you can take a short trail that will lead you to the camp. You also have the option of finishing the rest of the Barr Trail, which is roughly 6.5 miles downhill. And, fun fact, this is the highest hiking cabin!

Devil’s Playground Trail

A much newer, shorter and some say prettier trail than the Barr Trail. With all these positives going for it, it’s the perfect option for those that want the beauty of nature without the excruciating bits.

Cog Railway

Rolling in next year May 2021, take a train to Pikes Peak!

RAD Hostel - Bike Race Down
Bike Race Down

If you want to feel the thrill of a racing cyclist but are not interested in the grueling ride up, take a tour that will allow you to bike down the mountain. The winding turns are an exciting, continuous, and thrilling ways to experience such a grand peak. Keep in mind that this option is mostly downhill, but not entirely. You will be required to pedal a little but not nearly as much as the incline.

Things to check out along the way:

Crystal Creek Reservoir

A quiet oasis glimmering near the Pike’s Peak highway and a great spot for fishing. This is a beautiful viewing spot of Pikes Peak Mountain and the gorgeous creek.

Crow Gulch Picnic Area

This small wooded picnic area is 3 miles from the Pike’s Peak highway. Disappear into the woods of the Mount Esther Trail, and it’s a 6-mile round trip hike. Enjoy the wildflower field meadows during the spring and summer months.

Catamount Trail

The trail begins at the small streamside town of Green Mountain Falls and ends at the South Catamount Reservoir. The end of the trail is a mossy green lush, looking paradise that will make you feel like you have found heaven on earth.
